Our private photography tuition programmes are tailored to suit our clients needs.

Private Tuition in the Peak District

Generally we start our programmes at 9:30am. The exception to this is if you have booked to incorporate a sunrise or sunset shoot, or have booked a half day starting in the afternoon. We always email a confirmation of booking to our clients when they have booked a workshop with us- this information dossier will confirm your course start time(s).

Most courses will start with a tea or coffee and a discussion to further clarify what you want out of your day. The exception to this being when booking a sunrise shoot, where you will get straight out on to location.

Our half day courses last around 4 hours and full days last around 8 to 8½ hours in duration. A stop for lunch at a Country Pub will be included for all guests with us over the lunch time period (not half days), although the actual lunchtime drinks are not included in the price.

Private photography tuition sessions have no set format, as each individuals needs are so different. Therefore no two sessions are ever exactly the same. We tailor the workshop to exactly what you want and need and structure the day around these needs. Simon will ensure that you remain challenged enough, whilst being able to retain the information; and ensure there are no gaps in your knowledge. The vast majority of our clients have the “ah ha!” moment during the workshop, when information suddenly clicks into place and makes sense.

For anyone wondering what a format could be for a workshop which suits their needs, they are always welcome to speak with Simon on 07511 075739 or email the office >> with a number for Simon to call you back on.

Other Items

Money- most places do accept debit / credit cards but it is advisable to bring along cheque book and spare cash as there are a few places around here that do not accept cards. Also, lunchtime drinks are not included so you will need money for this.

Mobile Phones- being located in a rural environment not all mobile phone networks pick up a signal. The best network for this area is O2.

Our programmes are tailored for each individual. Everybody is welcome– from those who have yet to open the box of their first DSLR right the way through to established professionals. We provide tuition to all in a relaxed and friendly manner. No question is too big or too small, too silly or too advanced!

The main purpose of each workshop is photography, not fell walking or hill climbing. However, having said that, walking will be involved to get to the most picturesque locations. Most walks are no longer than 30 minutes in duration. The difficulty of the walks all depends on the aspirations of the individual and the weather. Walking boots and weather proofs are a must to bring!

They are most certainly welcome, but will not be able to join in on the workshop, unless they pay the additional fee. Being based in the beautiful Peak District National Park, there are plenty of stunning sites to see and activities to keep them amused during the day. We can accommodate for non-participating chaperones, however they will be required to pay a small fee (£15) to cover the cost of lunch and teas / coffees during the day.

One to One fashion photography workshopWHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?

On our Private Camera Use days it is essential to bring your own digital SLR (or camera you are working with if not a DSLR) and at least a wide angle lens, as well as your camera manual, spare battery (fully charged), spare CF cards, sturdy walking boots, warm clothing & weatherproofs. In summer you might want to bring a sunhat and sun-cream too.

We loan out tripods if required. You are welcome to bring your own if you prefer, however, this is not essential.

For Digital Imaging aspects / days you will want to bring with you your own laptop or desktop computer to work on. An external hard drive or flash drive with images on.

For Studio based workshops you won’t necessarily need the outdoor clothing equipment, however weather permitting and if you wish to do some shots outdoors you may want to bring this type of clothing just in case!

If you wish to work with your own lighting equipment or speedlights you are welcome to work with these instead of our equipment. Please let us know prior when you inform us of what you want to cover on ‘your day’.

Again you are very welcome to bring along some of your images for review and critique and for those already in the business of photography, Simon is very happy to review your website of images.

The prices for all our One to One Photography Tuition Programmes include tuition from Simon Watkinson, transport to lunch and locations (where applicable) and lunch (drinks at lunchtime are not included).

Generally our Private Photography Tuition programmes start at 9:30am. The only exception to this is if you have booked to do a sunrise or sunset shoot, have booked half a days tuition in the afternoon or we have agreed a different start time prior. We always email a booking confirmation after we receive your booking and your start time will be confirmed in this document.

Photographing flowers on a Private Photography Tuition WorkshopWHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO COME FOR LANDSCAPE BASED DAYS?

Everyone has their own favourite season, and it really depends on what you like and what suits you. We run one to one photography tuition days throughout the year, but can emphasise:

Spring – great for beautiful blue skies, clean sharp air and snowdrops and daffodils dotting the countryside, as well often times spring rain, which inevitably means rainbows and stormy skies. Newly born lambs and calves can be seen everywhere.

Summer – generally warm and green and great to be outside from dawn to dusk!

Autumn – perhaps the most photogenic of all seasons. The moorlands turn russet and the landscape is bursting with colour. Late Summer / early Autumn is also a great time to photograph the heather.

Winter – we are regularly subjected to snow flurries that coat all the surrounding hills. Occasionally, heavier snowfalls transform the countryside into a magical landscape. We are rarely snowed in however. In the unlikely event of severe weather, we will reschedule your day(s) to another convenient time- meaning you will not lose your money. If the roads are untreated, we will arrange to meet you at a convenient and safe place and come and collect you in our 4×4.

We provide courtesy transport for our guests throughout the workshop allowing them to sit back and relax whilst travelling from location to location.

Your tutor, Simon Watkinson is a highly experienced Photographer and tutor and is sympathetic to the needs of those starting out into Digital Photography- be it you are switching over from film or this is your very first DSLR camera. Our philosophy to teaching is being proactive and Simon will rally round you to ensure you understand each and every step. However, at some points throughout the day Simon may encourage you to venture out and develop your own creativity, and give you constructive review and critique afterwards.
